Pizza Planet 🍕

Toy Story 🧸

Imagine the neon lights, the noise of arcade machines, kids running everywhere, and in the middle of it all those white‑and‑red Pizza Planet boxes landing on the table. The pizza itself is classic American arcade food: soft, slightly thick crust, simple but generous tomato sauce, lots of melted cheese… and, in the official home versions Disney/Pixar later shared, fun little green “alien” meatballs to echo the three‑eyed aliens from the claw machine. 🚀

🧠 Did you know ?

Pizza Planet is a fictional chain, but its delivery truck has become one of Pixar’s most famous Easter eggs: it appears in almost every Pixar film, even when Pizza Planet itself isn’t part of the story. Fans love hunting for it. The restaurant mixes three very 90s vibes: fast‑food, arcade, and sci‑fi décor. Recreating the pizza at home is really about recreating that family‑night atmosphere as much as the food.

Ingredients

For the pizza dough

  • 250 g (about 2 cups) all‑purpose or bread flour
  • 4–5 g (about ½ packet) instant dry yeast
  • 160 ml (⅔ cup) warm water (not hot)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp sugar

For the sauce and cheese

  • 150–200 g (⅔–¾ cup) tomato passata or canned tomato sauce
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 200 g (about 2 cups) grated mozzarella
  • 30 g (¼ cup) grated parmesan (optional, for extra pizzeria flavor)

For the green “alien” veggie meatballs

  • 200 g cauliflower florets (fresh or thawed from frozen)
  • 80 g peas, cooked (fresh or frozen)
  • 80 g canned white beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tbsp basil pesto
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs (plus more if needed)
  • Salt and pepper

For decorating the “alien” faces (optional but great for photos)

  • A few pitted black olives (for eyes)
  • A little mozzarella or cream cheese to “glue” the eyes on

Step 1 – Make the pizza dough

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until slightly foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir with a spoon, then switch to your hands as it comes together.
  4. Knead on a lightly floured surface for about 5–8 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape into a ball, place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for 30–40 minutes, until puffed.

Step 2 – Quick Pizza Planet‑style tomato sauce

  1. In a bowl, stir together the tomato passata, minced garlic, olive oil, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  2. Taste and adjust seasoning. It should be punchy and flavorful – this is arcade pizza, not a subtle fine‑dining sauce.

Step 3 – Make the green “alien” veggie meatballs

  1. Cook the cauliflower in boiling salted water or steam until very tender, then drain well. Let excess moisture evaporate (you don’t want it watery).
  2. In a food processor, add cauliflower, peas, white beans, pesto, egg white, salt, and pepper. Pulse until fairly smooth but still slightly textured.
  3. Add the breadcrumbs and pulse briefly. The mixture should be soft but able to hold its shape when rolled; add a little more breadcrumbs if it’s too loose.
  4. Roll into 8–12 small balls and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake at 180 °C / 350 °F for about 15–20 minutes, turning once halfway through, until they are set and lightly golden on the outside but still soft inside.

Step 4 – Shape the dough and assemble the pizza

  1. Preheat your oven to its highest setting (230–250 °C / 450–480 °F), ideally with a pizza stone or an upside‑down baking tray inside to heat up.
  2. Punch down the risen dough gently and transfer it to a lightly floured surface.
  3. Roll or stretch it into a large circle about 28–30 cm / 11–12 in across, leaving the edge slightly thicker for a soft crust.
  4. Transfer the dough onto a sheet of baking parchment.
  5. Spread a thin, even layer of tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a small border.
  6. Sprinkle the grated mozzarella all over, then the parmesan if using.

Step 5 – Add the “aliens” and bake

  1. Arrange the green veggie meatballs on top of the cheese – aim for 1–2 per future slice (about 8 total).
  2. Slide the pizza (on the parchment) onto the hot stone or tray.
  3. Bake for about 10–15 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese is fully melted and starting to brown in spots.

Step 6 – Decorate the alien faces

  1. Slice small pieces of black olive to make eyes.
  2. Use a tiny dab of mozzarella or cream cheese to stick 2 (or 3, if you want to echo the movie aliens) eyes on each green meatball.
  3. If you like, add a tiny strip of olive as a mouth.

When your pizza comes out of the oven, still bubbling, you can officially declare your “Pizza Planet Night” open. It’s not just a pizza; it’s a ticket back to arcade lights, 90s birthday parties and games that go on way past bedtime. Put the movie on, slide the pizza into the middle of the table, and let everyone grab a slice and bite into their little edible alien. If, just for a moment, you feel like you can hear the claw machine or spot the Pizza Planet truck on screen, that’s your mission accomplished. 🍕
