Phoebe’s Grandma’s Cookies

Friends 🍪

Picture the scene: Monica, obsessed with perfection in the kitchen, spends hours trying to recreate “the best cookies in the world,” Phoebe’s grandma’s secret recipe… only to discover it actually comes from the back of a Nestlé Toll House chocolate chip bag. These cookies are a classic Friends gag and the perfect symbol of a friends’ night in: you bake a big batch, eat them still warm in front of a few episodes, and everyone fights over “just one more”.

🧠 Did you know ?

In the episode, Monica burns through multiple test batches trying to copy the exact flavour and texture of Phoebe’s “perfect” cookies, which fits perfectly with her over‑the‑top chef personality. When Phoebe realises the recipe comes from Nestlé Toll House, she’s convinced it’s the name of her French great‑grandmother, “Nestlé Toulouse”, one of the most beloved misunderstandings in the whole series.

Makes about 24 c🍪🍪kies
Total time: ~30 minutes (about 10 minutes baking)
Level: beginner‑friendly, super shareable

Ingredients

  • 225 g unsalted butter, softened (room temperature)
  • 150 g white sugar
  • 150 g brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 340 g all‑purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 300 g chocolate chips (dark, milk, or a mix)

Optional: 80 g chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts).

Step 1 – Make the base

  1. Cream the butter and sugars
Beat the softened butter with the white and brown sugar until light and creamy.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla.

Step 2 – Add the dry ingredients

  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt.
  2. Add this dry mix to the butter mixture in 2–3 additions, mixing just until combined (don’t overmix or the cookies will be tough).

Step 3 – Fold in the goodies

  1. Fold in the chocolate chips and, if using, the chopped nuts with a spatula.
  2. Mix just enough so they’re evenly distributed through the dough.

Step 4 – Shape the cookies

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 °C / 350 °F.
  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  3. Scoop dough into balls (about 1 heaped tablespoon each) and place them on the tray, leaving space between them as they will spread.
  4. Gently flatten the tops with your fingers if you prefer wider cookies.

Step 5 – Bake

  1. Bake for 8–12 minutes, until the edges are golden and the centres still look slightly soft.
  2. Remove from the oven and leave the cookies on the tray for 5 minutes to set.
  3. Transfer to a wire rack to cool… or eat them warm while the chocolate is still melty.

🌼 How to serve for a real Friends night ?

Pile the cookies onto a big plate or into a bowl, put on a few episodes (bonus points if you choose “The One with Phoebe’s Cookies”), and let everyone grab cookies with coffee, tea, milk or hot chocolate. It’s the easiest way to turn a simple hangout into a cosy Friends‑style evening.
